The Jewish Federation of Greater Long Beach seeks a dynamic Director of Development to further build the Jewish Community of over 16,000 Jews in California’s fifth largest city, a beautiful Pacific Coast community. The ideal candidate will be a proven professional who is capable of thriving in a multi-dimensional environment.  

The chosen candidate will exhibit the skills needed to create a sustainable and vibrant fund development program, including a comprehensive multi-year, multi-stream campaign, with a goal of $6,000,000 in capital and program funding, and $10,000,000 in endowments and bequests over the next five years, in concert with the Executive Director.

The Director of Development serves on the executive management team and will lead the development team. Responsibilities will include creating  and executing a strategic plan which includes major gifts, annual community campaign with a goal of $1,500,000, supplemental donor directed giving, endowments, planned giving, corporate sponsorship, foundation grants, tributes, direct mail, e-philanthropy, leadership development, women’s campaigns, and outreach to prospective donors, in order to meet current and future multi-agency community identified needs.

The Director of Development will be an instrumental part of a community-wide effort to strengthen communal resources and facilitate new approaches to the changing landscape of Jewish Philanthropy. The Director will lead the coordination of a multi-agency fund development team lead by the Jewish Federation & Jewish Community Foundation, and their beneficiary Jewish Community Partnership Agencies including the Alpert Jewish Community Center, Jewish Family & Children's Service, and other partner agencies, as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Implement total fundraising strategy in conjunction with partner agency executives, as appropriate
  • Develop strategies to integrate annual, planned giving, corporate, sponsorship and foundation funding streams
  • Collaborate with multi-agency Donor Relationship Management Team to develop infrastructure to effectively manage prospects
  • Execute successful multi-year, multi-agency capital, endowment and priority program Fund for Our Future campaign
  • Direct strategic planning for joint development efforts
  • Develop cultivation strategies and timeline for donor contact by joint development team, and lay leadership, in collaboration with agency executives
  • Increase donor base and increase dollar totals of unrestricted gifts
  • Lead prospecting and donor research efforts leading to the cultivation and solicitation of new donors
  • Actively set the standard for and engage in leadership gift solicitation. Cultivate, steward, and build effective relationships with a portfolio of select and prospective donors at the $1,000 and above level
  • Develop a system of accountability with performance metrics to determine the success of strategies and activities
  • Effectively manage relationships for at least 75 donors/prospects at all times, and solicit contributions as appropriate

Qualifications and Success Factors

  • At least 8-10 years progressively responsible experience in a combination of high-profile corporate, entrepreneurial, and/or non-profit settings with major responsibility for business sales and/or fundraising and institutional development
  • Ability to articulate a clear and understandable vision and inspire others in its support
  • Ability to lead strategically by positioning self as team leader (for both professionals and volunteers), facilitating buy-in and moving collaborative teams through problem solving and creative thinking processes to achieve high-quality results
  • Ability to manage statistical data to assess fundraising effectiveness
  • Working knowledge of multi-stream, capital and endowment fund raising
  • Demonstrated ability to inspire confidence and trust among donors who want to know that their personal philanthropic goals are being addressed, and their contributions are being stewarded with the highest degree of professionalism and efficiency
  • Demonstrated success in building, cultivating and stewarding new relationships leading to measurable results
  • Models a personal commitment to the Jewish community, Jewish values and to broader civic and community issues
  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple tasks with proven organizational skills
  • Articulate written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong competency in all Microsoft Office Suite programs, Outlook, and Raiser’s Edge
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Graduate degree preferred (JD, MBA, MSW)
